Has frustration over clogged gutters, or the gutter-cleaning process, driven you to search for gutter guards? One that will keep your gutters free from debris without the need for semi-annual cleaning? As you undertake your search for a gutter solution, you will come across two basic types of gutter guards: Micro-mesh and solid-topped guards. So what’s the difference between the two? Which is more effective at keeping gutters free from debris and funneling water away from your home?
Solid-top gutter guards.
The earliest gutter guard technology to emerge was solid-top gutter guards. Most solid-top gutters work like this: A curved solid-top sits over the surface of the gutter, curving back into the gutter on the front edge. As it rains, the surface tension of the rainwater curves around the edge of the gutter guard. Afterward, into the gutter itself. Meanwhile, leaves and other debris are deflected from the top of the gutter guard. Consequently, its unable to make it through the small channel that lets rainwater into the gutter.
While solid-top gutter guards can be effective, they do pose some problems. First, some gutter guards do not have any sort of true barrier for leaves and debris. This means leaves and debris do occasionally make their way into the gutters. Over time, that can cause clogs that need to be manually removed. Second, surface tension must develop for the rain to make its way into the gutter. Thus, solid-top gutter guards don’t always funnel water effectively.
Once the rain starts falling, it can take a while for the surface tension to form and direct water into the gutter. If water hits the top of the gutter guard too swiftly, it overwhelms the small opening in the gutter guard that allows water in, rendering the gutters ineffective. Finally, Solid-top gutter guards are notorious for forming large, dramatic icicles. These can damage the gutters or pose a danger around your home.
Micro-mesh gutter guards.
Micro-mesh gutter guards work on an entirely different technology than solid-top gutter guards. They feature a finely perforated metal surface that sits atop the gutter. The perforations are so fine that they can keep out a grain of sand. When it rains, the micro mesh allows the water to enter the gutter freely. However, any type of debris is blocked from entering the gutter.
Micro-mesh gutter guards solve the problems posed by solid-top gutter guards. They keep all but the tiniest debris out, while still allowing stormwater to enter the gutter. Any particles that do enter the gutters are small enough to be washed away by the rain. Additionally, many models of micro-mesh gutter guards do not have to be installed underneath your shingles. This makes installation easier and preserves any warranties your roof might have.
