Your gutters shuttle capture water from your rooftop and shuttle it safely away from your home’s foundation. However, your gutters might only be part of your home drainage strategy. Whether out of necessity or preference, your home might require additional drainage. The Gutterman knows how important an overall strategy is in protecting your home from stormwater; that’s why we offer multiple drainage options!
Rain Barrels
Rain barrels have been growing in popularity. They are an environmentally friendly option to collect rainwater and reuse it around your house. As little as a quarter inch of rain on only 400 square feet of rooftop will give you 60 gallons of water, and 1 inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of rooftop will yield 600 gallons. Rain barrel water serves many purposes such as watering plants, washing your car, giving your pet a bath, or adding water to a swimming pool.
Not only do rain barrels help to reduce your water consumption, they also help increase water quality in your area. Each time it rains, water flows quickly across surfaces toward drainage systems that usher water to local waterways, taking pollutants with it. When the water is collected and used around the yard, the soil and plants help drain out any pollutants before the water trickles into the local waterways. Your rain barrels also can help keep any storm drains around your home from becoming overwhelmed in heavy rains because you’ll be diverting much of the water from your rooftop that otherwise would have followed the flow of the rest of the stormwater into the local drainage system.
French Drains
Even with a solid gutter system, sometimes water can pool around your home. In these instances, a drainage system must direct the water away from your home’s foundation. The most common choice for this type of drainage is a French drain. French drains collect water underneath a gutter downspout. Trenches are dug below the ground and filled with a pipe and/or gravel to allow the water to flow away from your home.
Down Splashes and Gutter Extensions
Sometimes an extensive French drain isn’t needed to direct water away from your home, but water still needs some extra direction to keep from pooling around your home’s foundation. In those cases, a down splash or gutter extension will do. A down splash or gutter extension will add some length to your gutter system. This way your gutters deposit water an adequate distance from your home rather than next to your home’s foundation.
